The Oscar Micheaux Institute

Talent is everywhere. Access is not.

The Oscar Micheaux Institute is in its founding phase and operates under the fiscal sponsorship of Riggle Me That Productions, a 501(c)(3) organization. Pilot programming and partnerships are underway now, ahead of a full Los Angeles opening in 2028 to 2029.

The lights go down for one man.

Author · Producer · Distributor · Owner

Hollywood had no door for him. So he built the house.

The first major Black feature filmmaker in American cinema. When the industry shut him out, he wrote, produced, distributed, and owned his films, selling shares of his pictures farm to farm, church to church, theater to theater. More than forty films across three decades, without ever waiting for permission. He built the infrastructure himself.

What the Institute is

An institution for the storytellers the industry has not learned to see.

We exist to close one stubborn gap between being discovered and building a career.

Discovery
A moment. A screening, an award, a room that finally says yes.
A career
Infrastructure. Mentorship, craft, capital, community, and ownership.
The Institute
The structure between the two, built in his name, deliberately, in public.

III · The Missing Middle

Who the field overlooks

No film school. No mentor. No way in yet.

Between raw promise and a working career sits the missing middle. The field calls them hard to reach. We call them the point. We begin there.

  • 01

    Talent without credentials

Emerging storytellers with talent and lived experience, but no MFA, no connections, no map.

  • 02

    Voices rarely reached

Foster-experienced and justice-impacted storytellers the industry almost never finds.

  • 03

    Stories found nowhere else

At-risk young people whose perspectives exist in no writers' room today.

The lineage

The festival grew into an institution.

2018 The festival is founded

The Micheaux Film Festival opens in Los Angeles, a stage built for filmmakers the industry overlooked.

2026 The transition begins

Festival operations pause as the festival begins its next chapter within the Institute. Pilot programming opens under the Institute name.

2028 to 2029 The Institute opens in full

The Institute opens fully in Los Angeles. The Micheaux Film Festival evolves into a program of the Institute, carrying forward its tradition of celebrating bold filmmakers as part of a broader mission focused on access, workforce development, mentorship, and career pathways.

The work already in the room

The work is already in the room.

Current programming

Social-change storytelling is not a program area for us. It is the founding instinct. Year round, and already underway, we stand with young people experiencing homelessness through mentorship and guest speakers from across the entertainment industry. And the door opens wider still: young people have volunteered at the festival itself, working inside the industry rather than watching it from outside.

The Institute is being built for and with the communities it serves, across Los Angeles and, in time, beyond it.

VII · The Founders' Wall

The names are not on the wall yet. That is the point.

The Institute opens in full in 2028 to 2029. It is being built now.

Every great institution has a founders' wall. Ours is still blank. What gets decided in the next two years, who funds it, who advises it, who builds alongside it, will be engraved here for decades.

Studios, networks, and companies ready to put their infrastructure behind the pipeline.

  • Funders

Philanthropies and individuals who want to build the institution, not sponsor an event.

  • Advisors

Industry leaders willing to lend judgment, access, and honesty to the founding advisory circle now forming, and to the programs it shapes.
