The first major Black feature filmmaker in American cinema. When the industry shut him out, he wrote, produced, distributed, and owned his films, selling shares of his pictures farm to farm, church to church, theater to theater. More than forty films across three decades, without ever waiting for permission. He built the infrastructure himself.

The Oscar Micheaux Institute builds talent infrastructure for storytellers. It exists to close one stubborn gap, the distance between being discovered and building a career.

Who the field overlooks
Between raw promise and a working career sits the missing middle. The field calls them hard to reach. We call them the point. We begin there.
Emerging storytellers with talent and lived experience, but no MFA, no connections, no map.
Foster-experienced and justice-impacted storytellers the industry almost never finds.
At-risk young people whose perspectives exist in no writers' room today.

The work already in the room
Social-change storytelling is not a program area for us. It is the founding instinct. Year round, we stand with young people experiencing homelessness through mentorship and guest speakers from across the entertainment industry. And the door opens wider still: young people have volunteered at the festival itself, working inside the industry rather than watching it from outside.
The Institute is being built for and with the communities it serves, across Los Angeles and, in time, beyond it.

The names are not on the wall yet. That is the point.
Every great institution has a founders' wall. Ours is still blank. What gets decided in the next two years, who funds it, who advises it, who builds alongside it, will be engraved here for decades.
